Key takeaways for the quarter ended June 30, 2026:
Global equity markets staged a powerful recovery, more than reversing the first quarter's decline. The defining feature was not a simple rotation back into growth-oriented sectors but the dominance of a single theme — the artificial intelligence (AI) buildout and the semiconductors and memory chips that power it. What defined the quarter was the dispersion between the “spenders” on AI capex and its “receivers.” The receivers — chipmakers, memory producers and equipment suppliers — led, and they led in every major market globally.
Within the U.S. large-cap market, dispersion was unusually wide. Semiconductors and semiconductor-equipment companies posted the strongest gains by far, and information technology returned 31.8% — the only sector to outpace the S&P 500 Index, which returned 15.2%. Energy was the only declining sector as the Iran-related risk premium unwound, with most other sectors landing well in between.

Lower-quality memory producers in the semiconductor industry outpaced the leading names signaling that security selection drove returns, not style or quality. The Russell 1000 Growth Index rose 16.8% quarter to date against 13.9% for Russell 1000 Value Index, and that relatively narrow gap is itself telling. As the technology sector grows to dominate more of the value index, the same AI leadership shows up on both sides of the style divide.
Beyond AI themes, strong returns from industrials, consumer discretionary and financials point to a genuine broadening in the S&P 500.
Outside of the U.S., headline indexes showed rebounds over the first quarter. The MSCI Emerging Markets (EM) Index rose 24.1%, the MSCI All Country World Index (ACWI) ex USA gained 14.5% and the MSCI EAFE (Europe, Australasia, Far East) Index finished up 10.9% — all on a quarter-to-date basis. Small- and mid-cap stocks (SMID-caps) also fared well globally, with the Russell 2500 Index, which tracks the SMID-cap universe, advancing 20.3%. Small caps alone also fared well as reflected in the MSCI ACWI Small Cap Index, which advanced 14.9% quarter to date.
The second quarter's narrow, semiconductor-led leadership was again decisive. Strategies exposed to the winners fared well, particularly those willing to hold the most volatile gainers, while strategies anchored in quality and dividends tended to participate in the rally but trailed the broader indexes.
Of the 36 Capital Group equity-focused mutual funds and ETFs, 16 outpaced their benchmarks in the quarter with 19 of 36 ranking above the median against peers. Year-to-date peer ranks are similar, with 15 out of 36 funds in the top half, as a strong second quarter offset a weaker previous quarter.
U.S.-focused strategies
Growth strategies were among the chief beneficiaries of the quarter's leadership, as their technology and AI exposure aligned with where returns were concentrated.
As growth themes dominated, little premium was placed on quality or dividends. Certain growth-and-income funds trailed the S&P 500 despite solid absolute returns.
International and global strategies
Overseas, the same dynamic between spenders and receivers played out. The MSCI EM Index's headline gain of about 24% masked sharp divergence within the index, as China and Brazil declined while Korea surged amid a boom in select memory chipmakers.
Longer term perspective
As Capital Group’s chief investment officer, Martin Romo, pointed out: We are in a unique market moment with a strong case for active judgment because passive allocations are not striving to outpace their benchmarks —only replicate its return patterns. As a result, they do not factor in valuation risk, position sizes or change in fundamentals.
As market leadership evolves, with today’s leaders often becoming tomorrow’s laggards, Capital Group’s role is not to simply replicate benchmarks, but to use judgment and conviction to deliver strong results over the long term.
Mutual fund and ETF rankings are based on total return. ETF returns are based on net asset value (NAV) and those are used to determine the rankings.

For Capital Group ETFs, market price returns are determined using the official closing price of the fund's shares and do not represent the returns you would receive if you traded shares at other times.
Investments are not FDIC-insured, nor are they deposits of or guaranteed by a bank or any other entity, so they may lose value.
Investors should carefully consider investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. This and other important information is contained in the ETF prospectuses and summary prospectuses and in the mutual fund prospectuses and summary prospectuses, which can be obtained from a financial professional and should be read carefully before investing.
Capital Group exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are actively managed and do not seek to replicate a specific index. ETF shares are bought and sold through an exchange at the then current market price, not net asset value (NAV), and are not individually redeemed from the fund. Shares may trade at a premium or discount to their NAV when traded on an exchange. Brokerage commissions will reduce returns. There can be no guarantee that an active market for ETFs will develop or be maintained, or that the ETF's listing will continue or remain unchanged.
Investing outside the United States involves risks, such as currency fluctuations, periods of illiquidity and price volatility. These risks may be heightened in connection with investments in developing countries. (Also applies to CGGR, CGDV, CGXU, CGGO and CGDG).
Nondiversified funds have the ability to invest a larger percentage of assets in the securities of a smaller number of issuers than a diversified fund. As a result, poor results by a single issuer could adversely affect fund results more than if the fund invested in a larger number of issuers. See the applicable prospectus for details. (Also applies to CGGR, CGMM and CGDG).
The return of principal for bond portfolios and portfolios with significant underlying bond holdings is not guaranteed. Investments are subject to the same interest rate, inflation and credit risks associated with the underlying bond holdings.
Lower rated bonds are subject to greater fluctuations in value and risk of loss of income and principal than higher rated bonds.
Smaller company stocks entail additional risks, and they can fluctuate in price more than larger company stocks.
