Buying shares

Once you’ve opened an American Funds account, you have several options for buying additional shares.

Buying additional shares

You can add money to your account at any time. You may want to talk to your financial professional before buying shares. He or she can offer advice and help you make decisions that fit your long-term financial plan.

Investments can be made to your account online or by phone once you've linked a bank account. Log in and click Buy.

You can also submit an investment check and instructions by mail.

Establishing an automatic investment plan

Also known as dollar cost averaging, an automatic investment plan authorizes us to deduct a specified dollar amount from your bank account on the schedule you choose. Investing small amounts regularly over the long term can help you weather market fluctuations.

To set up an automatic investment plan online:

1. Log in to your account.

2. Click Automatic Transactions.

3. In the Investments section for the selected account, click Add New.

  • $250 for most funds
  • $1,000 for the money market fund and state-specific tax-exempt funds

Reinvest

A majority of our shareholders automatically reinvest their dividends and capital gain distributions, allowing them to add more shares without a sales charge.

Cross-reinvest

Many shareholders reinvest dividends or dividends and capital gain distributions from one fund into another (within the same class) — with no sales charge. This service allows you to use income from your funds to help create a more diversified investment program.

After we receive and accept your purchase request, the shares will be credited to your American Funds account(s), generally on the same business day. Requests received after the close of the New York Stock Exchange will be invested at the next business day’s applicable offering price.

Investments are not FDIC-insured, nor are they deposits of or guaranteed by a bank or any other entity, so they may lose value.

Investors should carefully consider investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. This and other important information is contained in the fund prospectuses and summary prospectuses, which can be obtained from a financial professional and should be read carefully before investing. Similar information is contained in the CollegeAmerica Program Description and ABLEAmerica Program Description, which can be obtained from a financial professional and should be read carefully before investing. CollegeAmerica and ABLEAmerica are distributed by American Funds Distributors, Inc. and sold through unaffiliated intermediaries.

Depending on your state of residence, there may be an in-state plan that provides state tax and other state benefits not available through CollegeAmerica (such as financial aid, scholarship funds and protection from creditors) or ABLEAmerica. Before investing in any state's 529 plan, investors should consult a tax advisor. CollegeAmerica and ABLEAmerica are nationwide plans sponsored by Virginia529.
