Politics and the economy: Could Washington derail a soft landing?

Editor-in-chief of Quarterly Insights magazine

By almost any measure, the U.S. economy has been tremendously resilient, with a robust job market and vibrant consumer spending. That’s raised hope of a “soft landing,” in which growth expands even as inflation recedes.

However, the economy will have to grapple with more than rising interest rates, punishing gas prices and subdued international growth. It will also confront mounting political disarray, repeated threats of government shutdowns and a combative presidential race.

In our recent webinar, Politics and the economy: Could Washington derail a soft landing? Capital Group economist Anne Vandenabeele and international policy advisor Tom Cooney delved into the economic and market outlook, with a special eye toward the potential impacts of the U.S. political landscape. The event was moderated by Quarterly Insights editor-in-chief Walter Hamilton.

Anne Vandenabeele covers economic developments in the U.S. and Japan as an economist at Capital Group. She has 23 years of investment experience (as of 12/31/2023) and  holds a master’s degree with honors in economics from the University of Edinburgh and a master of philosophy in economics from the University of Oxford.

Tom Cooney is the international policy advisor at Capital Group. He has 29 years of foreign affairs experience and joined Capital Group in 2023. He holds a master's degree in international business studies from the University of South Carolina and a bachelor's degree in communications from Cornell University.
