The company was founded in 1998 by a seasoned European telecommunications entrepreneur with ties to Africa. Celtel had approximately 4 million managed subscribers in 13 countries on its GSM networks at the time of the Fund’s investment. Celtel’s market share across its operational footprint of 250 million people was about 45%.
