Support for our Asian and Pacific Islander associates

Fellow associates,

In recent months, there has been a surge of violence against Asians and Pacific Islanders (API) in the U.S. Many of our API friends and colleagues have personally experienced discrimination, verbal attacks and other acts of harassment.

Racism in all its forms and against any community is painful and extremely damaging. At Capital, our priority is the well-being of our associates. This is why we are committed to do our part to stop anti-Asian racism – and for that matter, racism of any type – and support those who have been impacted.

In May 2020, we joined a coalition of corporations and non-profits led by Ascend, the largest Pan-Asian organization for business professionals, to aid in their work to fight discrimination, cultivate talent and connect leaders across industries. This month, our Benefits team will host small group sessions for API associates to help them process this increase in anti-Asian racism as part of our focus on culturally relevant wellness.

In light of what is going on, many CG associates are hurting. This is a time to show that we care and make a difference. Here are a few ways that each of us can be an ally:

  1. Learn more. Our Leading and Engaging Asian Professionals (LEAP) Capital Community is hosting an Open Forum on Friday, March 12, from 12:00 – 1:00 pm PST. It’s meant to be a safe space where associates of API descent can share their thoughts and emotions. All associates are welcome; you can learn more about the forum and register here.
  2. Raise awareness about the violence being perpetuated against the API community. LEAP has curated a list of articles and videos that provide more information about these incidents and the history of anti-Asian violence. It’s also important to report any instances of anti-Asian assault and other related crimes at StopAAPIHate.org.
  3. Donate to organizations that are actively combating racism, including several non-profits eligible for the Racial Justice Special Match. Asian Americans Advancing Justice is one such organization that advocates for the civil rights of the API community.
  4. Speak out. If you experience or witness discrimination of any kind in our workplace, please report it to your manager, your HR business partner, or the HR Open Line.

A real strength of CG’s culture is how we care for one another – particularly when a colleague is in pain and unsettled. Let’s do what we can to stand up and support our fellow associates and dismantle racism.
