U.S. investment spending is picking up

Excluding energy, U.S. private investment is moving steadily higher.

Private investment was a drag on U.S. economic growth for most of 2016. However, the headline numbers did not tell the full story. Energy investment fell by over 65% since the end of 2014 and reached the lowest level in over a decade last year, as companies reduced spending to limit losses and support near-term profits. During this time, private investment excluding energy moved steadily higher as companies continued to invest in their businesses despite economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
