Save time with RecordkeeperDirect online excess refund processing

Now you can process excess refunds online more efficiently with our new RecordkeeperDirect® online capabilities. Excess refunds can be processed for individual participants or in bulk for multiple participants across multiple plans.

You can process refunds manually using the search fields to find the participant and add them to a list individually. Refunds can also be processed in bulk by preparing a file using the specified XLS or CSV template and importing the participant records to process the refunds with a single request.

To get started, navigate to the Plans section. Go to the Bulk Actions tab, then to Refund Requests. You’ll see options to either create your participant list manually or import a file for bulk processing. You can also view existing refund requests from this section, along with specific refund information for all participants included in the request. The types of refunds available to process are:

  • Excess 415 after-tax: Refund due to excess contributions over IRC 415 limit
  • Excess aggregate ACP: Refund due to failure of Actual Contribution Percentage (ACP) test*
  • Excess contribution ADP: Refund due to failure of Actual Deferral Percentage (ADP) test*
  • Excess elective deferral: Refund of excess over the annual elective deferral limit

The system will validate the data, and you’ll have an opportunity to review the data before submitting for processing.

We appreciate your trust in Capital Group and the opportunity to service your clients’ retirement plans. If you have any questions about processing excess refunds, please call us at (800) 421-6019.

 * ACP and ADP are annual nondiscrimination tests that non-safe harbor 401(k) plans must pass to meet IRS qualification requirements.
