Life at Capital Group
Sure, you know how old you are—and probably how tall—but what about those more elusive personal health numbers such as your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose? Finding out where you stand on these numbers is a great opportunity to assess your overall health and wellness and, in some cases, identify health risks you may not be aware of.
Capital Group offers all of our U.S. associates free Health Screenings though our Capital Wellness program. Offered on-site at larger offices or through participating providers and at-home kits, Capital makes it convenient for our associates to get a snapshot of their health.
Many times these Health Screenings confirm what our associates already know or they are a wake-up call to jump on the path to wellness.
Sally Holte, Retirement Plan Sales Consultant in San Antonio, had a wake-up call after she had her Capital Wellness Health Screening back in 2013. “I was devastated to find out that I was not only overweight, but in the obese category based on my BMI! I was in tears,” she recalls.
The first thought she had was of her loved ones who depend on her to be at her best. “I decided that next year I would come back, be at a normal weight and lower my BMI for my health—and to make sure that I will be around for my family for many years to come.”
To do that, Sally decided to get back into running. Since then, she has run three half marathons! “Prior to the Health Screening I was sedentary. I had no time to exercise and I wasn’t eating healthily. Now I wake up at 5 a.m. to run and I’m very health conscious,” she says.
When Sally went back for her Health Screening a couple of years later, her results revealed a very different story. She recorded a weight loss of 50 pounds and decreased her BMI by 7 points, putting her back in the “healthy” range. “I was very proud of myself!” she says. “Obesity is truly an epidemic in our country. If we didn’t have the Health Screening program I probably would have never gone to get my numbers checked. Thanks to that screening, I’m a better employee, wife and mother—and am feeling great!”
Hoping to help inspire others to feel the same, Sally recently became a member of the SNO Wellness Committee. “Living healthy is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle,” she says. “I know that if I can do it, anyone can do it!”
