Investing in our communities

Our associates work to improve the world around them. We've channeled their diverse passions to create Capital Cares. The collective of philanthropic programmes represents a global spectrum of causes and interests.

Capital associates help out with Homes4Families, a nonprofit organization that builds homes for veterans and military families.

London's Bloomberg relay

The Capital Stars, representing our London office, was one of the 120 teams participating in the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay. Each runner raced one mile of the 10-mile relay around the city's historic financial district.

The event raised £27,258 (US$35,000) for educational causes.

Investing in our environment

A grassroots effort to reduce paper and electricity use has evolved over three decades into our global CG Green programme. Each office addresses its particular needs, and all of us strive to become better environmental citizens. We are finding ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, and are lowering our energy use and CO2 emissions.

SPOTLIGHT

100,000 earth-friendly helpers

Seeing an inefficient food-waste disposal process, one of our own associates researched worm composting. On a warm day in April 2019, Capital Group welcomed one hundred thousand helpers to our campus in Irvine, California, each hungry to make a difference.

The result is organic fertiliser for our landscaping — and enough to share with associates for their home gardens.

Investing in our people:
Diversity and inclusion

Our differences make us better. Across Capital, we build diverse teams within a culture that promotes a true sense of belonging. A variety of backgrounds and life experiences provide different perspectives, which we believe leads to better ideas and better results for the people we serve.

Recruiting

Our CAPtivate programme introduces first-year MBA women to the investment industry. Since its launch in 2014, the programme has attracted 120 participants.

CAP@city is a programme that provides mentors for racially/ethnically diverse students enrolled in pre- and first-year MBA programmes. We’ve mentored 50 students since launching in 2016.

Taking action

“Racism, injustice and inequality have no place in our organisation, or for that matter, in our communities or our country.”

Capital Group chairman Tim Armour

The Capital culture nurtures diversity and a sense of belonging, and we are determined to do more. We have a specific plan to build diverse teams of associates at every level and hold our leaders accountable.

We also encourage change beyond our walls by increasing our contributions through grants and matching gifts for nonprofit organisations that promote racial equity.

Investing on behalf of our clients

Our mission is to improve people's lives through successful investing. Our investment decisions consider how a company impacts its community, its customers, its suppliers and its employees. This information helps us understand risks and find opportunities.

We've long considered environmental, social and governance issues in our investment decisions. Now we are developing a system to illustrate how we integrate ESG into our process. We also participate in organisations that advance these issues within the financial industry.
