Investing in our communities

Our associates seek to elevate and enrich the world around them. We’ve channelled their diverse passions to create Capital Cares, a collective of philanthropic programmes that represent a broad spectrum of causes and interests.

Capital associates help out with Homes4Families, a nonprofit organization that builds homes for veterans and military families.

Best Buddies bond

With the help of Capital Cares, U.S. associate Erin raised more than US$25,000 in 2019 for Best Buddies. The nonprofit organisation works to end the social, physical and economic isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

London's Bloomberg relay

Associates from our London office came together as The Capital Stars team — one of 120 total teams from across the financial sector — to participate in the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay. The race was 10 miles, with each runner taking one mile as fast as they could around London's historic financial district.

The event raised £27,258 (US$35,000) for the chosen cause of education.

Investing in our environment

What began more than three decades ago as a grassroots effort to reduce paper and electricity use has evolved into our global CG Green programme. Each office develops innovations that address its particular needs, and all of us strive to reduce our dependence on non-recyclable and non-reusable materials and look for meaningful ways to become better environmental citizens.

SPOTLIGHT

100,000 earth-friendly helpers

Dissatisfied with a food-waste disposal process that yielded no usable material, one of our own associates researched worm composting.

On a warm day in April 2019, Capital Group welcomed one hundred thousand helpers to our campus in Irvine, California, each hungry to make a difference.

Investing in our people:
Diversity and inclusion

Our differences make us better. At all levels of Capital, we have built diverse teams within a culture that promotes a true sense of belonging. We appreciate a diversity of backgrounds and life experiences that provide a variety of perspectives. We believe this leads to better ideas and better outcomes for the people we serve.

Recruiting

Our CAPtivate programme introduces first-year MBA women to the investment industry. Since its launch in 2014, the programme has attracted 120 participants.

CAP@city is a programme that provides mentors for racially/ethnically diverse students enrolled in pre- and first-year MBA programmes. We’ve mentored 50 students since launching in 2016.

Taking action

“Racism, injustice and inequality have no place in our organisation, or for that matter, in our communities or our country.”

Capital Group chairman Tim Armour

The Capital culture nurtures diversity, and we are determined to do more. A defined framework aims to create a culture of belonging, build diverse teams of associates at every level, and hold our leaders accountable.

We also continue to encourage change beyond our walls by increasing our contributions through grants and matching gifts to nonprofit organisations that are advancing racial equity.

Investing on behalf of our clients

Improving people’s lives through successful investing is Capital Group’s mission. We’ve long believed that knowing how a company impacts its community, its customers, its suppliers and its employees is fundamental to understanding investment risks and opportunities.

While the elements of ESG have long been core considerations for us, we are working to further systematise our approach to integrating ESG into our investment process. We also actively participate in organisations that are advancing these issues within the asset management industry.
