About Us

Our History

Our roots date back to 1931, when Jonathan Bell Lovelace founded our organisation as a research-based group focused on helping investors in the wake of the stock market crash of 1929. Today, we have thousands of associates worldwide serving the needs of individuals and institutions. 

  • 1931

    Capital Group is founded in Los Angeles by Jonathan Bell Lovelace.


    We assume management of The Investment Company of America®, the first of what would become the American Funds family of mutual funds.

  • 1953

    An investment in Royal Dutch Petroleum makes Capital Group one of the first U.S.-based firms to invest outside North America.


    We begin investing in Japan equity.


    The Capital System℠, our approach to portfolio management, is established.


  • 1962

    Our first office outside the U.S. opens in Geneva.


    Associates in our Geneva office create the Capital International indices (now known as the Morgan Stanley Capital International S.A. indices) – the first set of stock market indices for non-U.S. markets.

  • 1973

    We begin managing fixed income assets for institutional clients.


    We begin serving high-net-worth investors through a group now known as Capital Group Private Client Services.

  • 1982

    Our Tokyo office opens – our first in Asia Pacific.


    Our Hong Kong office opens.


    In response to the World Bank’s request for a vehicle for institutions to invest in developing nations, we launch an emerging markets growth fund – the first of its kind.


    Our Singapore office opens.

  • 1992

    We introduce our first private equity fund. In the years since, we’ve become prominent investors in emerging markets private equity. 


    We are hired by our first client in Africa. 

  • 2007

    We begin offering investment management services for individuals in Japan.


    Our Mumbai office opens.


    Our Beijing office opens.

  • 2011

    Our Sydney office opens.
