Capital Group and Lincoln Financial: 35 years focusing on improving investor outcomes

In 1987 a new variable annuity was born — American Legacy® — bringing together two venerable companies with a common focus on superior investment results, quality service and improving investor outcomes. The Lincoln National Life Insurance Company, which was founded in 1905 and has gone on to weather more than a century of market volatility, has been a pioneer in variable annuities since 1967.

Capital Group, the home of American Funds, was founded in 1931 — right in the jaws of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl — and has grown to become one of the world’s largest investment managers, with over $2 trillion in assets under management1. Together, Lincoln Financial Group and Capital Group pursue the upside potential of the market through our investment experience with guarantees from Lincoln National.

With a long-term track record of results, we are proud of our shared rich history and reputation. After more than three decades, American Legacy:

  • Maintains more than 275,000 in-force policies2
  • Manages more than $44 billion in assets2
  • Has paid out more than $38 billion in retirement income and legacy protection2
  • Is the only variable annuity in the industry to offer exclusive access to the full lineup of the American Funds Insurance Series®, including the American Funds Insurance Series — Target Date Series.

35 years’ worth of long-term perspective

Here are some of the most important lessons from the past few decades:

  • Plan for longevity
Retirees who were 65 in 1987 are turning 100 this year and may be counting on a retirement portfolio that can take them to age 100 and beyond with lifetime protected income.
  • Plan for inflation
Inflation had been fairly modest over the past 35 years. But the year-over-year bite of inflation stealthily adds up over time. Retirement income plans need to consider the long-term effects of inflation.
  • Plan to balance growth and protection
Retirees may not want to put too much stress on their portfolio, especially in light of recent market volatility, and should consider diversifying retirement income plans by locating a portion of their assets in variable annuities providing protected income.
